WHAT TO WEAR TO YOUR DOG-EARED PHOTOGRAPHY PORTRAIT SESSION

When choosing outfits, think about something you’d feel really happy seeing framed on your wall every day. These portraits will likely become part of your home for years to come, so it’s nice to wear something you feel confident in and that feels like you at your best 💜

Whether we’re at the beach, in the forest, or somewhere your dog loves to explore, the goal is to feel comfortable and natural while still looking timeless. I usually recommend avoiding very casual throw-on pieces like hoodies or activewear, as they can feel a little too “everyday” in finished artwork.

Simple, understated outfits always photograph beautifully and keep the focus where it belongs – on your connection with your dog.

If you’d like to be in a few images (and I always encourage it!), here are some easy options that work really well:

  • Jeans with a plain t-shirt or a cosy knit jumper

  • Boots or your favourite Converse

  • Layers in neutral, natural colours like beige, cream, navy, olive or soft grey

These kinds of outfits are simple, comfortable, and photograph beautifully - timeless choices you’ll still love when your portraits are hanging on your wall years from now.

Soft colours and comfy layers like this always look great 💜

Dress for movement

We’ll be walking, sitting, maybe crouching or kneeling for a few shots, so wear clothes you can move in easily. You don’t need to be fancy - just comfortable, tidy, and ready to play with your dog.

A few things to avoid

Super bright colours, big logos or brand names, or busy patterns can stand out more than you’d like in your photos and take the focus off your dog. I’d skip hoodies, jandals, or Crocs — they’re super comfy (I get it!), but they don’t tend to photograph as well as more polished casual pieces.

The main thing

These portraits will become part of your home — something you’ll see and smile at every day.
So take a little time to choose an outfit that feels like you, just maybe a touch more intentional than your usual weekend wear. Think soft layers, simple textures, and colours that complement your dog and the surroundings.

When you feel good in what you’re wearing, it shows. You’ll look relaxed, confident, and connected — and that’s what makes your images truly timeless

Pro tip

Bring a small bag to stash any phones, keys, sunglasses etc so they don’t end up making a cameo appearance in your portraits.
